Twilight
The dahlias droop
bright purples fade
an ombré trio emerges
gradients of the hue
violet, lavender, lilac.
Jasmine branches dangle
delicate buds
on their slender boughs
their fragrance
remains
permeating the room
my nose pulses with joy
sending tingles
to every cell,
every molecule
traversing my body.
Twilight beckons
the flowers
bend,
inch lower each day,
ready to slumber.
Yet I can’t bear
to release them
back to the earth
feeding the soil,
the life within it,
giving birth
to blades of grass,
clusters of mushrooms,
new blossoms,
where bees
float around their edges,
drink their nectar,
pollinate the habitat,
create a tantalizing landscape
where tomorrow’s children
scamper about.
I wait one more day.
I sit, I watch, I revel
in the delicious decay.
